Bimal Kar

Writer

Bimal Kar was born in Taki, West Bengal, in 1921. He authored dozens of Bengali classics that remain popular today. Kar is known for his compelling characters, and his engagement with the ideas of death, morality, the tribulations of the middle- and working-classes and the complex sociocultural and political tensions of a modern city. Kar’s childhood was spent across small-town Bengal and Bihar. As a college student, he moved to Calcutta and became a journalist, and worked with the magazines Parag, Paschimbanga and Satyajug, before beginning his long relationship with the iconic cultural magazine Desh. Numerous younger writers have spoken about the mentorship they have received from Kar, who was also an editor par excellence. Kar won the Ananda Puraskar in 1967, the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1975, and the Saratchandra Award from Calcutta University in 1981. He passed away in his Salt Lake residence August 26, 2003.
